A Galway Girl

Leg 9 did not look good for CAMPER. A short 550 nm sprint from Lorient, France to Galway, Ireland it was forecast to be dominated by two sail reaching – conditions that have proven to be the boat’s Achilles heel. However, it was a must win leg for the team if they were to have any hope of salvaging a top podium position. Determined to deliver a leg win the team reconfigured the boat and reduced its weight significantly – a fired up crew departed Lorient with their sights set on first place.

The result? A superlative sailing performance that saw CAMPER take out their first leg victory and 30 hard earned points that moved them to second overall for the race. Here’s a video giving a brief recap of all the action of the leg.

  1. :) THANK YOU ….. great summing up. The whole team deserved this win …… at last all the effort pays off, and no bugger moments. Have really enjoyed watching from my chair at home your progress around the world …. thanks again. My only sailing experience was a dingy around the bay …. once for a weekend on a trailer sailor and once on a small cat so to follow your exploits amazes me! All the best for the next in harbour races ….. will be right there yelling as normal for a win …..

  2. I’d like to hear how much weight the shore crew pulled out of the boat to make it go that fast. Rumor has it they even rationed the toliet paper, 3 squares per man!
