Race ‘policeman’ runs his ruler over CAMPER

Emirates Team New Zealand’s entry in the Volvo Ocean Race CAMPER is undergoing the final measurement process as the start of the race looms.

The purpose is to ensure that CAMPER complies with the Volvo 70 class rule book. The final measurement is an exacting process. It started within days of the yacht arriving at Alicante and will not be finished until the end of this week.

Skipper Chris Nicholson: “It’s a big job and even this final stage involves the boat coming out of the water and every aspect of the hull, rig, keel and sail wardrobe being minutely inspected and signed-off by Volvo measurers. Nothing is left unchecked.

“Although the requirements are extremely complex we’re confident that we will come through it with no major issues.”

Skipper Chris Nicholson says that he was keen to get the final measurement procedure underway and the boat confirmed as being within class rules as quickly as possible.

“Measurers are like policemen – you just don’t argue with them. There is absolutely no mileage in it. We have gone out of our way to involve them in our boat from the start.

“The measurement work is a huge part of getting ready for the Volvo Ocean Race. Co-skipper Stu Bannatyne and I have spent up to 50% of our time since the campaign started on getting it right.

“It’s also a huge part of the process for the team’s technical director Nick Holroyd and our principal composites structural engineer Gio Belgrano.

“From the earliest stages of the design process measurement considerations have been in the front of mind for the team and a massive amount of energy has been devoted to ensuring that all the innovative ideas developed for CAMPER are within the rules.

Nicholson says that the team has made every effort to be as open as possible in their relationship with the Volvo Ocean Race measurers.

“We wanted to make sure from the beginning that we weren’t doing anything that we shouldn’t be. We submitted drawings to the measurers, before the moulds had even been built for the boat and we have kept them informed every step of the way ever since.

“Without the measurement certificate we can’t go racing.”
